Cancer loves by taking care of you, and reads being taken care of as the only convincing proof it is loved back. It moves sideways rather than straight at what it wants, so the signals need reading. Once in, it is in — and the withdrawal when hurt is not sulking but armour, which is why the person on the other side so often mistakes it for indifference.

Family, chosen or born into, is the organising fact of a Cancer life. It remembers everything — every kindness and every slight, in the same drawer. The friendships are deep and few, and the work is letting people in before they have proved themselves, rather than after.

Anywhere the work is care made professional: medicine, teaching, hospitality, property, food, history, anything to do with homes or with the past. Cancer is a far better businessperson than it is given credit for, because it reads a room instinctively. It needs to feel needed at work; without that, the talent goes flat no matter what it pays.

Cancer rules the chest and the stomach, and the stomach is the barometer — worry lands there before it reaches the head. Digestion, appetite and sleep all move with the emotional weather, and none of them respond to being ignored. Water genuinely helps: swimming, baths, the sea. So does saying the thing that is being held.

The path runs from being held to holding. Most Cancers spend the first half of life managing other people’s feelings expertly and their own badly. The turn comes when it stops treating its own needs as an imposition — and discovers that the people it protects were strong enough to hear them all along.
